New York City, one of the richest cities in the world can still notice poverty around every corner.
Throughout the five boroughs, approximately 1.4 million people — mainly women, children, seniors, and people with disabilities — rely on soup kitchens and food pantries.
In accordance with the Synod Youth Department and in conjunction with parishes of New York and Long Island, last 2014 year before holidays 1,609 meals were gathered for the Thanksgiving season.
Continuing in the tradition set forth by the Synod Youth Department, the Prince Vladimir Youth Association organized the Food Bank Project 2015.
Prince Vladimir Youth Association reached the agreement with the Food Bank of New York to gather food for the needy, including Russians, in the weeks before Thanksgiving.
The main task this year was not only the collection and providing food for people in need but also combining and extending the network of Orthodox youth from different parishes.
The event started in October 18th and finished in November 15th, 2015.
Internal communication was organized through the involvement of youth local coordinators in parishes of NYC and Long Island.
Every parish was supplied with empty boxes for collection of can food.
The Los Angeles cathedral of the Holy Transfiguration joined the project and collected food on behalf of the Prince Vladimir Youth Association for their local food bank collecting over 120 pounds cans of food.
Therefore, in conjunction with parishes of New York, Long Island, and Los Angeles in 2015 year 1,800 pounds of food roughly feeding 2000 people were gathered for Thanksgiving meals.
This event has shown the great possibilities of coordinated youth work by parishes to help those in need.
